Strategies for smarter catchment hydrology models: incorporating scaling and better process representation

چکیده
Abstract Hydrological models have proliferated in the past several decades prompting debates on virtues and shortcomings of various modelling approaches. Rather than critiquing individual or approaches, objective here is to address critical issues scaling hydrological process representation types with suggestions for improving these attributes a parsimonious manner that captures explains their functionality as simply possible. This discussion focuses mostly conceptual physical/process-based where understanding internal catchment processes hydrologic pathways important. Such can be improved by using data from advanced remote sensing (both spatial temporal) derivatives, applications machine learning, flexible structures, informing through nested studies which are elucidated. Incorporating concepts connectivity into model structures promising approach flow path representation. Also important consideration scale dependency parameters avoid mismatch between measured modelled parameters. Examples presented high-elevation regions water sources differ temperate tropical environments more attention has been focused. The challenge incorporating spatially temporally variable inputs, hydrologically pathways, climate, land use requires modellers collaborate hydrologists include at relevant scales—i.e. develop smarter models.

As hydrologists confront the future of water resources on a globalized, resource-scarce and humanimpacted planet, the educational preparation of future generations of water scientists becomes increasingly important. Although hydrology inherits a tradition of teacher-centered direct instruction – based on lecture, reading and assignment formats – a growing body of knowledge derived from engineer...

Mountaintop mining and valley fill (MTM/VF) coal extraction, practiced in the Central Appalachian region, represents a dramatic landscape-scale disturbance. MTM operations remove as much as 300 m of rock, soil, and vegetation from ridge tops to access deep coal seams and much of this material is placed in adjacent headwater streams altering landcover, drainage network, and topography. In spite ...

Bedside teaching is a vital component of medical education. It is applicable to any situation where teaching is imparted in the presence of patients. In teaching in the patients’ presence, learners have the opportunities to use all of their senses and learn the humanistic aspect of medicine such as role modeling, which is vital but difficult to communicate in words. Unfortunately, bedside teach...
